Effective Date: May 7, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Cal Count io (“we,” “us,” “our”) collects, uses, and protects information when you visit calcount.io (the “Site”) and when you use the Cal Count io mobile application (the “App”). It applies to both the Site and the App; sections that apply to one and not the other are clearly labeled.
1. Information We Collect on the Website#
When you simply visit calcount.io to read articles, we collect very little information about you directly. The categories below describe what is automatically collected by standard web technologies.
1.1 Automatically Collected Data#
- Device and browser information: browser type and version, operating system, screen size, language preference
- Usage data: pages you visit, time spent on each page, referring URL
- IP address: used to approximate location at a country or city level for analytics
- Cookies and similar technologies: small files stored on your device that help us remember your preferences and serve relevant content
1.2 Information You Provide Voluntarily#
If you contact us by email, fill out a form, or sign up for a newsletter, we collect the information you provide (typically your name and email address). We use this only to respond to you and, if you’ve opted in, to send the newsletter you signed up for.
2. Cookies and Tracking Technologies#
We and our third-party partners use cookies and similar technologies to operate the Site, understand how it’s used, and serve advertising. Specifically:
- Strictly necessary cookies keep the Site working — for example, remembering your dark/light mode preference.
- Analytics cookies help us understand which articles are read, how readers find us, and where the Site can be improved. We may use providers such as Google Analytics or Cloudflare Analytics.
- Advertising cookies are set by Google AdSense and other ad partners to serve ads, measure ad performance, and limit how often you see the same ad.
You can control cookies through your browser settings (most browsers let you block or delete cookies). Note that blocking strictly necessary cookies may break parts of the Site.
3. Third-Party Advertising (Google AdSense)#
The Site uses Google AdSense to display advertising.
- Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on our Site.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this Site and other sites on the internet.
- You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings or aboutads.info.
- For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, Google’s use of advertising cookies is subject to consent under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The cookie banner on this Site allows you to accept or reject non-essential cookies.
A current list of Google’s advertising partners is available in Google’s Privacy & Terms.
4. Analytics#
We may use analytics services (such as Google Analytics or a privacy-respecting alternative like Plausible) to understand traffic patterns. These services aggregate data and do not identify individual readers. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
5. Information We Collect in the Mobile App#
When you use the Cal Count io mobile App, we collect additional information necessary to provide the App’s features:
5.1 Personal Information#
- Profile data: name, email address, age, gender, weight, height, and activity level
- Account information: data you provide during registration or when managing your account
- Contact information: if you contact our support team, we may collect additional details to assist you
5.2 Usage Data#
- Device information: model, operating system, unique device identifiers, mobile network information
- Log information: IP address, browser type, access times, pages viewed
- Analytics data: how you navigate the App, which features you use, how you interact with the meal-photo logging tool
5.3 Photos and Content#
The App lets you take photos of meals to log nutrition. These photos and any associated metadata you provide (timestamps, location if enabled) are stored as part of your usage data. Photos remain in your account and are not shared publicly.
6. How We Use Your Information#
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain the Site and App
- Personalize your experience and deliver tailored calorie and nutrition insights
- Process in-app purchases and manage subscriptions
- Analyze usage trends and improve our services
- Communicate with you, including customer support and updates
- Serve and measure advertising on the Site
- Monitor for security issues and comply with legal obligations
7. Third-Party Services#
The App and Site rely on a small number of third-party services, each with its own privacy policy:
- Firebase — data storage, analytics, and crash reporting for the App. See Firebase’s Privacy Policy.
- Google AdSense — advertising on the Site. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Cloudflare — content delivery and basic site analytics. See Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy.
We don’t sell your personal information to anyone.
8. Your Rights#
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct information that’s inaccurate
- Delete your account and associated data
- Object to or restrict how we process your information
- Port your data to another service in a machine-readable format
- Withdraw consent for processing that relies on consent (e.g., advertising cookies)
If you’re in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, these rights are protected under the GDPR. If you’re in California, the CCPA gives you similar rights, including the right to know what we collect and the right to opt out of the “sale” of personal information (we don’t sell it).
To exercise any of these rights, email us at contact@calcount.io. We’ll respond within 30 days.
9. Data Retention#
- Site visit data is retained for analytics purposes for up to 26 months, then deleted or anonymized.
- App account data is retained for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except where we’re required by law to keep it longer.
- Email correspondence is kept for as long as needed to respond and for a reasonable follow-up period, then deleted.
10. Children’s Privacy#
Cal Count io is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information to us, please contact us and we’ll delete it.
11. Changes to This Policy#
We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally to reflect changes to our practices or legal requirements. The “Effective Date” at the top will reflect the most recent change. Material changes will be announced on the Site or by email if you have an account.
12. Contact#
For questions about this Privacy Policy or our data practices, email contact@calcount.io.
